Problem Definition
Companies today are faced with many challenges:

  • The continual challenge of if and when they should be moving to new technologies. They are further challenged by the impact to their organization these technologies present and ability for the return on their investments. • A retiring workforce and preparing for future business needs.
  • Positioning career development initiatives and managing the progress of their people.
  • Aligning training to business needs .
  • Identifying the skills they have within their organization and utilizing this effectively.

The Process to Solution
The following process outlines our workflow in helping organizations determine their education needs.

  • Work with organization to determine the technologies within their supporting roles needing assessment.
  • Initiate setup of the SMART tool
  • Load appropriate skills dictionaries
  • Obtain employee listing and populate the SMART database.
  • Map employees to their respective organizational groups
  • Communicate and submit assessment to the organization for employee skill level rating.
  • Run reports to determine organizational gaps within skillset requirements.
  • Run reports to list training recommendations for each employee as well as the organization as a whole in developing custom education solutions.
  • Facilitate training requirements.
  • Reassess an organization to confirm education levels have been met.

The SMART Tool
The SMART tool is an application that uses predefined and/or your own proprietary skills dictionaries that align to an organization`s supporting roles. Mappings then exist from each skill to related education solutions at a modular level. User assessments performed against these skills, provides an organization with an analysis on skill gaps and specific education requirements. This in turn provides a tool to utilize for assessing an organization’s requirements that can then be mapped to specific solutions in helping a company move more effectively within new and existing platforms.

Core Components
The SMART tool itself is broken down into two primary components. The first component is an SQL Database structure housing all the tables, views, and relationships in support of the system. This Database structure is hosted and supported under Microsoft SQL 2005.
The second component is the graphical front-end system. The front-end system is Visual Studio .NET based to allow for easy access for end-user assessments at their site and for administrative reporting.

Skill Dictionaries
The SMART tool is populated with the necessary skills and roles mapping to the technology and education you are looking to assess. Some examples include: Microsoft Windows 2003/2008, XP/Vista, Active Directory, Visual Studio .NET, Sharepoint Server, PowerShell, SMS, Content Management Server, Biztalk, Citrix, ISA, Mobile Information Server, Host Integration Server, Application Center, Office XP, CISCO, Project Management and Exchange.
